Burn Out

Much of what I've written about here has been about committing seriously to writing, doing the work. You can make time for the things that you consider to be important, including writing. However, that time shouldn't be made at the expense of everything else in your life. There needs to be some balance or you will burn out. 

Unfortunately, burn out is something that I have some experience with. It can be hard, when there is so much work to be done, to feel like you can take a break. There is always so much to do, whether it is with work, school, writing, or family commitments. There will never be enough hours in the day to do everything we want to. So, we try to cram in as much as we can, trying to give 110% to every aspect of our lives. But that kind of grind can't be kept up forever.

If you are anything like me, you are probably familiar with this ugly cycle. You spread yourself too thin, try to keep too many plates spinning and eventually everything comes crashing down. It is something we know we shouldn't do, but at the same time it seems to be necessary. The grind, the hustle, it is what we need to do to achieve our goals, right? Not necessarily.

I'm not trying to suggest that you can reach your goals without working for them. Still, running yourself into the ground is not the answer. It can feel frivolous to lay around and watch a movie, spend an hour going to a yoga class, or meet up with friends for dinner and drinks when there is so much work to be done. But life can't just be about the work, you need to enjoy it too. 

So, if you are feeling like you need a break, take one. Binge watch that new Netflix series. Take a walk outside. Do something with friends or family. If you need a day off from writing, take it. Don't wait until you are already fried to take a break. It takes much longer to recover from a burn out than it does to not burn out in the first place. Your writing is important, but so are you.
